I am convinced that, according to God's plan, the power of life and truth is thousands of times greater than the power of evil. I believe that the vastness, organization, and beauty of the heavenly universe we see are but dim glimpses of the splendor and harmony that reign in an all-conquering, eternal universe of a higher order.
Short biography
Born on May 25, 1889 in Kyiv, Igor Sikorsky, the inventor of the helicopter, was the fifth child in the family of a doctor of medicine. From 1903 to 1906, he studied at the St. Petersburg Nautical School. In 1907, he entered the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. He built his first model helicopter at the age of 19. In 1908-1912, he built 6 models of airplanes and a helicopter in Kyiv. In 1911, he passed his pilot's exam on his C-5 airplane. He set 4 all-Russian records, made demonstration flights, and flew passengers. On December 29, 1911, he set a world record for the speed of flight with two passengers - 111 km/h. In January 1910, he tested an airplane of his own design, the C-6. From 1912 to 1917, he worked as a chief designer in the department of the Russian-Baltic Carriage Works in St. Petersburg.
Igor Ivanovich was not only a brilliant aircraft designer, but also an outstanding philosopher. Here are some of his aphorisms and advice: "The truth in politics is selective, the truth in engineering is mandatory"
He was a wonderful father and a very versatile personality: a philosopher, an engineer, a pilot. He was interested in many things: literature, classical music, history, astronomy... And his life itself was very eventful. By creating machines that could fly, my father managed to realize what seemed impossible at the time.
It was only in the late 1930s that Sikorsky returned to his youthful dream of creating helicopters, and in 1939 he designed his first successful helicopter, the Vought-Sikorsky 300, which began mass production for the U.S. Army in 1943.
In the summer of 1908, Ihor traveled with his father to Germany, where he became interested in the demonstration flights of the American aviator W. Wright and decided to build a helicopter, a safer aircraft than an airplane. The design was based on a coaxial scheme, with two propellers rotating in opposite directions.
